We showed a conceptually novel idea that nonlinear optical process could be manipulated in a variety of ways by controlling the relative phases among the electromagnetic fields relevant to its nonlinear optical process. We established such basis theoretically and experimentally. We also opened a way to build a new laser technology, that is, single-frequency widely tunable laser in the vacuum ultraviolet region.
